We contacted Jorge of BirdwatchinAlentejo as we were planning a trip to Lisbon and Evora in Alentejo. From our first contact he was extremely helpful and well-organised. Jorge responded quickly and positively to our request. Everything went as agreed and we ended up having two excellent days of birding with Jorge – one around the Tejo estuary and one in the Alentejo. Together they gave us a good glimpse of both a wetland area and the “steppe-land” birds of the interior. Jorge has an excellent eye for spotting birds at a great distance and in poor light and this, combined with his determination and knowledge of where certain birds might be found, provided some spectacular encounters. Chief among them was a single Red-knobbed Coot among hundreds of Coots which Jorge identified through a painstaking search; three juvenile Spanish Imperial Eagles on the ground feeding on the corpse of some dead animal. We had very good views from the hillside above. We saw three or four groups of Great Bustards and then late in the evening a Black Stork which was lurking in a dark water channel. There was much more. We found Jorge good company. He told us a lot about the habitats and local environmental issues. And he provided us with a delicious lunch, including the freshest oranges from his mother-in-law’s garden. It was dark when we finally called it a day – on both days! Great birding.

We would definitely turn to Jorge again if we return to the area.
