The Alentejo region occupies almost a third of Portugal and is composed of a wide diversity of habitats which are home to a huge variety of bird species. In addition to the protected Natural Reserve of the Sado Estuary, the Guadiana Valley and the Sierra de S. Mamede Natural Park are key areas identified by the Natura 2000 Network and are also Important Areas for Birds (IBA).
